World Health Day 2025, Healthy Beginnings and Hopeful Futures

April 7, 2025 in Adoption, Fostering

World Health Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1948.
This day, on 7th April, is dedicated to raising awareness about key global health issues and encouraging action to improve health and well-being.

Why is World Health Day Important?

World Health Day is an opportunity to highlight health concerns and promote access to quality healthcare for everyone.
This year, the focus is on “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” highlighting the importance of early healthcare interventions and fair access to medical services, especially for vulnerable children.

How World Health Day Relates to Fostering and Adoption

The theme of “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures” is particularly relevant to fostering and adoption agencies. In England alone, over 82,000 children are in care at any one time, many of whom have experienced neglect, abuse, or unstable living conditions.
These experiences can lead to complex physical and mental health needs that require dedicated and ongoing support.

Children in foster care are more likely to experience health challenges such as:

  • Higher rates of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Developmental delays and learning difficulties

  • Unmet medical and dental needs due to disrupted healthcare access

Providing children in care with early and consistent medical attention is essential to give them a strong start in life.
A healthy childhood is the foundation for a successful and fulfilling future, reinforcing the importance of accessible healthcare services for all children, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances.

Supporting Foster and Adoptive Families

Ensuring children in foster care and adoptive placements receive the medical and emotional support they need requires collaboration between healthcare professionals, social workers, and families. Some key steps towards achieving this include:

  • Regular health assessments and tailored medical care for children in foster placements

  • Mental health support, including counselling and therapy services

  • Training for foster carers and adoptive parents to understand and manage medical and psychological conditions

  • Better integration between social care and NHS services to provide streamlined, consistent healthcare access
